Fraudsters are currently booming in Waren (Müritz): The police received several reports of calls from fake police officers posing as investigators from a “SoKo” from Hamburg. The caller specifically asks about jewelry, cash and other valuables, giving the impression that it is a serious matter. The callers warn that these valuables are connected to an alleged Romanian gang of thieves who are apparently targeting the victim.
At least everyone called reacted correctly and informed the real police on 110, which may have prevented something worse from happening. These deceptions can quickly lead to financial and material losses, which is why a watchful eye is required. What is particularly perfidious is the fraudsters' claim that they can collect the valuables and keep them safe until the alleged thieves are caught. Similar fraud attempts have recently failed in the Röbel area, but the perpetrators there have also been partially successful.
New scam in use
The victim protection organization Weißer Ring warns about this new variant of telephone fraud. The callers manage to maintain a permanent state of alarm among the victims through intimidation and fear psychosis. How Focus Reportedly, the victims sometimes receive calls every quarter of an hour. Using a technical trick, the fraudsters even show the emergency number 110 on the display to inspire more trust.
It is not uncommon for fraudsters to advise you to go to the bank to withdraw money and hand it over to an alleged plainclothes police courier. Bianca Biwer, the federal manager of the White Ring, strongly advises not to allow yourself to be intimidated and to write down the name and position of the caller so that in case of doubt, contact the institution that supposedly called.
Precautions and Recommended Contacts
Loud Consumer advice center Con artists are particularly active when it comes to obtaining money or account information from their victims. These are often automated calls in which the callers pretend to be investigators from certain institutions. The police will never ask for valuables or money over the phone. If in doubt, those affected should always hang up and contact the local police station immediately to file a report.
It is advisable to protect yourself especially during these times and to search for information online so as not to become a victim of fraudsters. Anyone who falls for these scams could quickly find themselves losing savings or valuables.
