Heat wave reaches peak temperatures: thunderstorms threaten the magic of summer!

July 2, 2025 will go down in the history books of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a hot day. As [Zeit] reports, the part of the country experienced its warmest time of day of the year on Wednesday with a peak of 37.7 degrees Celsius in Boizenburg (Ludwigslust-Parchim district). The meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) even predict that temperatures in the afternoon could exceed 40 degrees.

Such extreme heat is only recorded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. [n-tv] highlights that all of Germany is being warned of “extreme heat”, with highs of up to 39 degrees in many regions. High pressure influence contributes to these exceptional summer conditions and ensures that the night remains tropical with temperatures above 20 degrees. However, planned cooling and thunderstorms are already in the starting blocks.

Storms approaching

A look at the forecast shows that the heatwave will not last long. Rain clouds and strong thunderstorms are expected from the evening onwards, which can bring gusts of up to 80 km/h. The [n-tv] reports also report more severe thunderstorms that will occur locally later in the evening and could also bring hail and heavy rain.

The current weather conditions could affect many people's holiday plans. Beaches and seaside resorts such as Rügen, Usedom and Warnemünde record high numbers of visitors. A refreshing jump into the water could be a welcome way to cool down for many at these temperatures. But be careful: During the hot season, the DWD warns of health risks from the high temperatures.

What comes after the heat?

The weather will be in a different light on Thursday. Only maximum temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees are forecast in the northeast, which means a significant drop in temperature. In the morning there will be heavy rain before the sun breaks through again. According to astrologers, Friday will also be clear to cloudy, but with similar temperatures to Thursday.

Apart from the heat, a varied weather situation can also be expected, which will be triggered by the coming rain and the thunderstorms from “Dieter”. These thunderstorm developments could nicely balance summer temperatures in the coming days and offer people in the region a little respite from the heatwave.

The records that have stood in Boizenburg since July 2022 at 39.4 degrees could soon be a thing of the past if the weather extremes continue. Will the next heat-tempered week bring a new record? Only time will tell. Read more about the current weather conditions on [Spiegel].
