Peak hunting season: Game meat is booming – these varieties are the favorites!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the main hunting season is in full swing, and the popularity of game meat is unbroken. According to the information from NDR Saddle of venison, leg of venison and wild boar steaks are at the top of the hit list of game meats. The demand for this healthy and natural meat is particularly strong at this time of year - apparently game is highly valued by consumers.
Jörg Stübe, the head of the Schildfeld Forestry Office, emphasizes that a comparatively large amount of game is shot in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which even supplies other federal states. An interesting survey by the German Hunting Association shows that 70 percent of those surveyed tend to view game as a healthy food. And around every second citizen eats game at least once a year - a trend that, as experience shows, is increasing.
The culinary diversity of game
Landesforst MV processes between 50 and 55 tons of game annually in its EU-approved facilities. Hunters sell the tasty meat directly to private customers, and weekly markets and specialist shops also offer a wide selection. Here you can find not only the classics such as goulash, saddle and legs, but also fine game specialties such as salami, ham, pies and liver sausage. The sales outlets offer an extensive range and promise a true feast for the senses.

Game meat can be used in many ways, be it for quick-roasts, as tender goulash or in a hearty game soup. The forestry offices also offer their own game products in so-called “forest shops”, and the exact name of the game species plays a crucial role here.
Prices and quality
The quality of the game has its price. Wild meat is more expensive than farmed meat, which is explained by the complex processing and increased costs. The price for wild boar is around 18 to 20 euros per kilogram, while saddle of venison costs almost twice as much. However, this investment is worth it – the high quality and exquisite taste are what make it worth it.
Although demand remains high, the number of wild boars hunted remains almost 19 percent below the ten-year average at 59,631 animals. In total, up to 400 tons of game were shot in the forestry offices in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. An exciting year for wild board lovers!
For anyone interested in regional products, the Landesforst also offers a wide range of other delicacies from the region, including spices, juices and even handicrafts that come from small factories. All products are characterized by their sustainable and ecological production. Current prices and offers are available at the points of sale listed on the Landesforst MV forest shops - there is something for every taste and budget.
