Stralsund book towers: elementary school students learn the city's history with Blaubert!
An exciting new phase in the book tower project began on October 1st in Stralsund. The ceremonial baton handover took place there in the Jakobikirche, which captivated over 300 primary school children. This was about promoting the love of reading: with every book page read, the mascot Blaubert should receive a piece of the city guard's outfit. This not only brings joy to reading, but also an exciting connection to the history of the city, as the city of Stralsund mentions in its report.
The “Book Towers Stralsund” project has been launched by the city library since 2017 and has since given numerous children access to literature. In the first few years, the focus was on, among other things, the greatest height of the churches and the length of brave sea creatures. This year, however, the new cooperation partner, the Stralsund City Watch, will incorporate science and culture from bygone times. Thanks to the creative ideas that come to the fore while reading, the project remains very popular with primary school students and their teachers.
A look at the competition
Moderated by Ann Christin von Allwörden, chairwoman of the city library's support association, the event was accompanied by an entertaining theater game. “Hans im Glück” by Theater Phoebus was the highlight of the day. Class 3b of the “Lambert Steinwich” Montessori primary school was awarded the golden book cup for their special achievements, and the little winners also received a visit to the Schwerin state parliament – a great experience for the young bookworms! The Stralsund city library highlights that every class in this competition was encouraged to actively participate in reading.
An impressive element of the project is the shape of the baton, in this case a lantern, designed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Ladisch was handed over to the city guard. This creative design not only takes children through a literary journey, but also promotes community spirit within school communities. A new goal is set every year, and the primary school students are always motivated to face the challenges.
Promoting reading today
The topic of reading promotion is particularly crucial in order to provide children with a foundation for their school career. The Librarianship emphasizes the importance of reading skills and the role of libraries as central points of contact for learning and leisure activities. Numerous programs are offered to help children and families develop a love of reading. In addition, projects like the book towers are an important part of motivating children from an early age and sustaining their interest in books.
This school year, the target is reading level, giving the book towers a modern approach. Not only the children themselves, but also the teachers and parents actively contribute to a positive reading environment. The invitation to take part in this literary journey applies to all primary school students in the region in order to immerse themselves in the exciting world of books.
Thanks go to all supporters, sponsors and committed teachers who make it possible for this great project to live on and promote enthusiasm for reading in Stralsund.
