Greifswald calls for participation: Become a landscape sponsor for nature!

Something is happening in Greifswald: The local agricultural initiative is actively looking for landscape sponsors to ensure the protection and promotion of local fields and their residents. On this sunny day, July 17, 2025, an information event is scheduled at 5 p.m. in the Botanical Garden, where those interested can find out more about the planned activities. The aim of this initiative is to ensure more flowers and fruits through planting campaigns, while at the same time maintaining ponds, ditches and field margins. A real hands-on activity is offered here, which appeals to both nature lovers and people who are enthusiastic about field birds, insects and herbs. These commitments are not only a step towards more green, but also a valuable contribution to climate protection, as NDR reports.

One person who is committed to these issues with all her might is Monika Ringenberg, an experienced graduate engineer in horticulture. She leads projects that build bridges between farmers and scientists at the University of Greifswald. Based on an agricultural farm south of Greifswald, she brings her expertise and passion to bear, especially in the “Agribiom” project, where she collects and analyzes valuable data about the soil. Ringenberg knows: “The soil is the foundation of our nutrition and health.” Their commitment shows that healthy and sustainable agriculture is possible if we all pull together.

Sustainable agriculture in focus

But what does all of this mean in the larger context? In times of climate crisis, species extinction and other challenges, it is more important than ever to develop sustainable agricultural and food systems. These systems are crucial not only for our food security, but also for protecting people, animals and ecosystems. The goals are clear: a diverse agriculture, food and forestry sector that is economically viable and offers prospects for young people, emphasizes BMEL.

While the UN's 2030 Agenda sets the direction, local initiatives such as those in Greifswald also draw on these goals. Measures such as mandatory animal husbandry labeling and action programs for natural climate protection aim to create transparency and strengthen our ecosystems. Germany is working hand in hand with the challenges of a changing world, whereby not only farmers but also the younger generation are asked to become active players in this transformation.

An appeal to all citizens

The search for landscape sponsors is more than just a call to care for plants. It is an invitation to everyone to take action and work to preserve our natural resources. So if you have a green heart and want to make a difference, attend the information event in the Greifswald Botanical Garden and find out how you can get involved.
