Greifswald's first wooden daycare center: demolition of the old GDR building begins!
Something is happening in Greifswald! From July 21, 2023, the city will become a new daycare center full of life and wood. The old, dilapidated building from the 1970s in the Schönwalde I/Südstadt district has served its purpose and will be demolished to make room for the new facility. Northern Courier reports that the project will break ground on August 1, 2023. The new daycare center, which has the illustrious name “Rainbow”, is being built right next to the existing building on Ernsthofer Wende.
A major concern of the city is the safety and happiness of the children. The old daycare building no longer meets the necessary structural and fire protection standards. During the construction work, however, the care of the children in the existing daycare center can continue seamlessly. The project comprises a total of two construction phases: First, modern group rooms for the little ones will be built by November 2026, before the old daycare center is demolished. By the beginning of 2027 at the latest, the new daycare center will be expanded with an additional sports room and a fresh kitchen including a cafeteria.
Sustainability and green spaces in focus
What is particularly noteworthy is that the new daycare center will be the first municipal wooden building in Greifswald. Innovative wooden frame constructions are used here, which are not only environmentally friendly but also keep construction costs within reasonable limits. In addition, a photovoltaic system with an output of 24 kWp will be installed and the roofs will be greened. A modern ventilation system with heat recovery ensures that fresh air always circulates and the room climate remains pleasant.
With a usable area of around 2,000 square meters, the new daycare center offers space for up to 60 crèche and 112 kindergarten children. The total cost of the ambitious project is around 10 million euros. It is supported by 3.67 million euros from urban development funding and around 1 million euros from a special needs allocation from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A real outdoor project that is beneficial for both the children and the surrounding area!
- Fertigstellung des Projekts bis Ende 2027 geplant
- Baubeginn: 1. August 2023
- Preis: 10 Millionen Euro
- Platz für insgesamt 172 Kinder (60 Krippen- und 112 Kindergartenkinder)
As the examples from other regions show, such as in Frankfurt, where a daycare center with wooden construction was put into operation, sustainability and the possibility of later recycling materials are at the top of the agenda. tectonics highlights that timber construction has both aesthetic and functional advantages, and we can only hope that this positive example sets a precedent! In Greifswald, the new building of the “Rainbow” daycare center not only creates a new educational location, but also sets an example for environmental awareness.
There is great anticipation for the new daycare center and the construction project is being followed with excitement. At a time when good child care is more in demand than ever, Greifswald is taking an innovative step into the future - and all in the interests of the youngest members of our society!
