Ludwigslust in construction fever: the train station is becoming a modern transport hub!

There's a lot going on in Ludwigslust! Just ten weeks after the start of the full closure of the ice rink line between Hamburg and Berlin, Deutsche Bahn is drawing positive interim conclusions at Ludwigslust station. As the Northern Courier reported, the completion date of April 30, 2024 remains unchanged and is not at risk, according to Andreas Kruse, the deputy project manager. The work at the station is crucial for the comprehensive general renovation of the 278 kilometer long route between Hamburg and Berlin.

What exactly is happening there? The station is being completely rebuilt and modernized. All tracks will be renewed, platforms 1 and 2 will be extended to make room for the new fourth-generation intercity trains. The historic canopy of the old train station building does not remain untouched either. There will be a 60 meter gap between the old roof and the new roofing, which will certainly add a certain flair for travelers.

Progress in construction

Construction work is in full swing, as is the case German railway reported. Over two thirds of the tracks and 96 switches have already been replaced. The extensive construction work in Ludwigslust also includes the dismantling of the old passenger underpass and the renovation of the platforms, which are now being extended to an impressive 416 meters.

The route between Hamburg and Berlin will remain completely closed until April 30, 2026, which means that travelers will have to get to their destination using rerouted trains and replacement services. Nevertheless, we can look forward to many improvements, as the general renovation is intended to transform the route into a high-performance network. Changes to replacement services have already been introduced: Line R will now run more frequently, while Line P will be shortened to the route between Ludwigslust and Parchim from November 1, 2025.

Extensive construction work and its effects

The construction site in Ludwigslust is not the only challenge for rail traffic. From October 18th to November 7th, 2025 there will be replacement bus services on the S2 between Hamburg city center and Hamburg-Bergedorf. Construction will also take place in the Hagenow Land station area and other places along the route in October and November, which is certainly not always easy for the residents.

Up to 200 construction workers are working at the same time for the Ludwigslust train station. While most of the noise-intensive work has already been completed, the expansion of platforms 3 and 4 is still pending. A new pedestrian path through the tunnel under the platforms will be opened at the end of October. This will be barrier-free and equipped with elevators to the platforms.

The general renovation of the station and the entire route can be seen as the next step into the future of rail connections between Hamburg and Berlin. And this is not only exciting for commuters, but also for all travelers who will be able to benefit from improved and faster rail transport in the future. Stay tuned for further updates on the development of this major construction site!
