Poultry farm scandal: Public prosecutor investigates animal cruelty!

Shocking revelations from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The public prosecutor's office has started investigations against a poultry farm in Plauerhagen, Ludwigslust-Parchim district, on suspicion of animal cruelty. This measure came after animal welfare organization ANINOVA released a video documenting worrying conditions on the farm. The footage shows chickens living in wire cages without access to perches, nests or opportunities to scratch. According to Nordkurier, such forms of keeping are often prohibited or are subject to strict regulations set out in the Animal Welfare Act.

The disturbing video footage caused a massive stir and raised serious animal welfare concerns. It is suspected that the prohibited cage keeping was practiced over a long period of time, although the poultry farm has not yet issued a statement on the allegations. After the recordings became known, the cage facility on the site was dismantled. Nevertheless, ANINOVA's criminal complaint remains, which underlines the seriousness of the allegations.

Legal situation and animal welfare

As the Tierschutzbund explains, the Animal Protection Act applies to all animals, including invertebrates. While most regulations relate to vertebrates, the protection of all animals is of central importance. In the Civil Code, animals are defined as fellow creatures who feel pain and suffering. The law states that animals must be protected from avoidable pain and suffering. Injuries can be punished under the Animal Welfare Act as well as damage to property.

In the event of animal cruelty, animal rights activists are called upon to collect evidence and report it to the responsible veterinary authorities or the police. However, they cannot sue on behalf of the animals themselves, which represents a loophole in the law. The demand for a collective action law to give animal protection associations the right to advocate for the protection of animals in court is becoming increasingly louder.

Current events not only raise questions about the conditions in which animals are kept in agriculture, but also about the effectiveness and protection that the Animal Welfare Act currently offers. The investigation into the poultry farm continues to be closely monitored. In the meantime, the debate about animal protection and the legal framework remains very relevant because, as the case often shows, there are still many problems that need to be addressed.
