Brawl at Marienplatz: Police warn of new camera surveillance!

Schwerin is once again showing its rough side: On Tuesday night, Marienplatz experienced a tumultuous scenario that was documented by the newly installed surveillance cameras. Since July 2025, 24 cameras have ensured that such incidents do not go unnoticed. The police, who observed the events at 3 a.m. at police headquarters, had to intervene when an argument between two men, a 24-year-old and a 39-year-old, escalated. There was also an 18-year-old from Schwerin who intervened in the argument. Attempts by several passers-by to separate the two brawlers failed. The 39-year-old temporarily lost consciousness due to a kick and had to receive medical care from police officers until the ambulance arrived. The victim's hospitalization followed first aid, which was provided quickly.

The situation on Marienplatz is becoming increasingly problematic, as another incident on the same evening shows. According to that Northern Courier A dispute was reported in a snack bar at 11 p.m., which also led to a physical altercation. This incident involved a 24-year-old Moroccan man who sustained facial injuries. Despite the reports, those involved had already left before the police arrived.

Investigations into grievous bodily harm

As a result of the two incidents, the police have initiated criminal proceedings for grievous bodily harm. The investigation is ongoing and it remains to be seen what consequences the people involved will face. The 18-year-old suspect from the first incident was temporarily arrested, but was later released from custody. This means that the security concerns at Marienplatz are an issue that not only concerns the police, but also the citizens.

The new cameras, which cover a larger area than the previous system, are intended to help detect and respond to such escalations more quickly in the future. After the failure of the old camera system at the beginning of 2025, equipping it with modern technology is a small step in the right direction. However, the question remains: How is the city dealing with the increasing violence and what is being done to ensure security at Marienplatz?
