Future of the Doberan monastery: 14th monastery market saves historical heir!

A special event is imminent: The next weekend Bad Doberan will once again turn into a center of cultural activity when the 14th monastery market opens its doors. This festival has established itself as a popular attraction and attracts thousands of guests every year. This year, around 7,000 visitors and more than 60 retailers are expected, who provide a lot of fun with medieval music, jugs and historical craft.

But the monastery market has a deeper meaning: it serves the fundraising collection for the urgently needed renovation of the former farm building of the Doberan monastery. As the NDR reports, it was originally planned that the new roof will be completed by the end of 2025. In the meantime, however, this time frame has shifted, and a completion is now expected at the end of 2027. This historic building, which is 745 years old, had an important function in the past: the monks used it to store and process grain.

The challenges of the renovation

The arcade sheets typical of the construction are currently preparing some difficulties for the craftsmen. After an arson in 1979, these arches were defenselessly delivered to the weather conditions. Now four arcades have to be completely demolished and rebuilt, which will cost 70,000 euros each. Since 2022, craftsmen have been busy securing the listed building and renovating the roof.

It is particularly important for the monastery association that the city of Doberan is not in financial isolation. The city has already applied three million euros in their own funds to save the monument. In 2020, Bad Doberan was also supported by the federal government with five million euros to advance the securing of the farm building. In the long term, a cultural center is to be created here that includes a library, a city archive and event rooms.

a piece of history

The Doberan monastery, which was founded in 1171, was once a Cistercian abbey and developed into a spiritual, political and economic center in Mecklenburg. The monastery church, also known as Doberaner Münster, is considered a significant high -Gothic brick building in Europe. Over long periods, the monastery was the burial of the Principality of Mecklenburg and had a variety of lands.

Another highlight of the monastery history is the foundation of daughter monasteries, including the Dargun monastery in 1209. At times, the monastery was an important place of pilgrimage, especially since the 13th century by the relic "Holy Blood". Despite various destructions, such as a devastating attack in 1179, the monastery has been rebuilt again and again and today still has numerous well -preserved parts such as the monastery wall, which has a length of 1.4 kilometers and goes back to the fire time.

With initiatives such as the monastery market, it is not only an attempt to collect money for the restoration, but also to preserve the cultural heritage and to strengthen the community. Hope for the future of the Doberan monastery facilities is nourished here that are more than just stones - they are memories and stories that are worth to be told.

For everyone who is interested in history, culture and craft, the monastery market is a compulsory event. You can find more information about the event and the renovation activities on the NDR websites, wikipedia and Wikipedia (to the monastery Doberan).
