Burst water pipe in Bergen: residents have been without drinking water for hours!
A burst water pipe interrupted the drinking water supply for residents in Bergen-Süd on Rügen on Thursday evening, October 31, 2025. The water supply for many households has been affected since 7 p.m., as NDR reports. The disruption was caused by a burst water pipe on a main, and the situation has severely affected residents in the area.
The Rügen water supply and wastewater treatment association (ZWAR) is responsible for the measure, and its technicians are on site. They are working hard to repair the damage, with the aim of completing the repairs by Friday, 2 p.m.
Bridging the water supply
In order to offer the affected residents a short-term solution, a water truck will be available from 8 a.m. at a discount store on the Street of the German-Soviet Friendship. However, it is important to note that the water from the water cart must be boiled before use to avoid health risks. This provides a temporary solution until regular water supplies are restored.
These types of incidents are not new to Bergen. A similar pipe burst occurred on June 25, 2025 in the grass chamber, where repair work on the drinking water pipe and a sewer collapse also affected the water supply. At that time, too, the water supply was interrupted for some households and the sidewalk was partially closed. ZWAR thanked the residents for their understanding while the repair work was carried out, which was supported at the time by the company ESTRA, as ZWAR informed.
Impact and outlook
The repeated incidents raise questions about how stable the region's infrastructure is. While technicians are doing their best to resolve the issues quickly and effectively, residents are concerned about the possible impact on water quality once the work is completed. Finally, there is no denying that drinking water supplies are central to everyday life.
While residents hope for water supply to be restored, it is hoped that infrastructure maintenance and upkeep measures will be strengthened in the future to avoid such incidents. It is clear: a reliable water supply is not just a convenience, but a cornerstone of the quality of life in Bergen and the surrounding area.
