Noise inferno over MV: Bundeswehr allows low flights of up to 75 meters!

A new adjustment in air traffic over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is causing divided opinions. From November 28, 2025, the Bundeswehr has announced that low-altitude flights of fighter jets at heights of only 75 meters will be permitted again. This decision comes at a time when the security situation in Europe is tense. This means that residents in the region have to expect more aircraft noise, which, according to Ostsee Zeitung is a “slap in the face” for some.

The low-level flights are particularly relevant for the training of Air Force pilots. In recent years, a lot of training has been carried out in regions outside of Germany, such as North America. Now the jets are to train closer to the ground again in seven designated airfield areas in Germany, including large parts of eastern Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. This is the first permit of this kind in a long time, and it is pointed out that low-level flights are particularly difficult to detect by radar and anti-aircraft systems, which is important for pilot training.

Effects of low-level flights

The increase in the low altitude to 75 meters has caused concern among many residents. Noise pollution from low-flying jets could have health effects on the population, including cardiovascular diseases and sleep disorders, warned the Tagesschau. People in the regions of Western Pomerania and the Mecklenburg Lake District are particularly affected, where the jets are allowed to descend to this altitude for a maximum of two minutes.

The exercises are part of a special training course for prospective Air Force flight instructors, who will fly over various German regions over a period of three weeks. According to NDR, low-level flights are only permitted with special permits and take place during the day on working days. But even if the Bundeswehr emphasizes that no targeted noise should be caused, it cannot be ruled out that the noise will frighten people and animals.

Future developments

The Air Force emphasizes that despite the increased training flights, there will be no additional low-level flights by fighter jets from allied armies over Germany. This could provide a certain degree of relaxation in the region. However, it remains to be seen how the new regulations will affect the quality of life of residents in the long term.
