Start border controls: traffic jams and protests between Germany and Poland!

From Monday, July 7th, there will be unusual traffic controls on the German-Polish border. In an answer to the increasing number of illegal entry, the federal police announced random checks. This measure is intended to limit undesirable migration and increase security, such as [nordkurier.de] (https://www.nordkurier.de/panorama/vorpommern- between-kmarett-und-kabarett-3715463). The Polish government has also reacted and is planning its own controls, as Prime Minister Donald Tusk explained. The background to these reactions is the German deportation practice in unauthorized persons. Protest actions in Poland, possibly even street blocks, could also heat the situation.

The controls at the borders have been mandatory for travelers, commuters and freighters since September 16, 2024. With an increase in crime and irregular migration, the federal government justifies the need for these measures. Therefore, travelers should be prepared to have an identity document such as an identity card or passport at hand, such as tagesschau.de notes.

traffic disruptions from construction sites

In addition to the border controls, drivers in the region have to prepare for traffic disabilities. From 7th to 11th July, repair work will be carried out on the state road 28 between Blumenthal and Ferdinandshof and on the L 32 in Eggesin, which lead to single -lane and traffic light regulations. The knot Lindenstraße/Karl-Marx-Straße in Eggesin will also be completely closed on Monday due to water and wastewater supply work. Deplacements are signposted so that the traffic flows can be diverted.

events in the region

Despite the tense situation, there is also reason to be happy: On Thursday, July 10th, the folk actor Uwe will appear in the Pasewalk cultural forum, and at 7.30 p.m. In addition, the port festival in Wolgast begins with the play "Sunshine Reggae on Usedom", which is also performed from 7.30 p.m. These cultural highlights could provide some distraction at a time when the social discourse on migration and security continues.

The expansion of border controls is not without consequences: since the measures, asylum applications in Germany have dropped compared to the time before. According to zdf.de there has been a significant reduction in illegal entry since the measures came into force. While almost 130,000 illegal entries were recorded in 2023, this number fell to a good 80,000 in 2024. The forecasts for 2025 indicate that this could be the lowest level since 2021.

Despite the controlled controls, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop, especially against the background of the concerns of the Polish citizens with regard to the possible problems due to deported refugees. With these new regulations, commuters and travelers are facing some challenges while the situation is tense in the entire region.
