Schwerin Castle Festival: Experience the state parliament up close on Sunday!

Schweriner Schloss, 19053 Schwerin, Deutschland - On June 14, 2025, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament opened its doors to all interested citizens. The event, traditionally on Sunday of the Schwerin Castle Festival, started from 10 a.m. and offered an excellent opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of state politics. The President of the Landtag Birgit Hesse had invited to get to know the seat of the state parliament and to promote the exchange between politics and citizens. As reported [NDR] (https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/schlossfest-schwerin-landtag-am-sonntag-fuer-llen-offenlandtag124.html), this was an excellent opportunity not only to ask questions, but also to maintain direct contact with MPs.

Visitors had the opportunity to talk to the MPs and to receive information about the work of the political groups and committees. What is actually being discussed in the committees? What does the Landtag president do? Questions that the citizens have employed found their answers here. Overall, the state parliament opened its doors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission at 4:30 p.m., as politics-mv.de explained.

colorful program for every taste

The attractive supporting program did not give up boredom. In the castle garden and on the "multiple mile", five factions with stands and information materials presented themselves. Visitors were not only able to visit the areas of the castle, such as the office of the Landtag President or the new conference rooms in the castle poultry, but also participate in tours to the tea pavilion on the northern bastion and the NDR state parliament studio. There were also successful musical appearances, including from the Schalmeienkapelle of the Malchin volunteer fire brigade and various dance groups of the State Carnival Association.

Special highlights were the free tours of the castle museum and the castle church as well as the continuous information on the parliamentary work in the plenary hall. The historic swing bridge between the castle island and the castle garden opened in the afternoon for about twenty minutes. This caused great crowds among the pedestrians, as in the report of Landtag-mv.de.

insights into the variety of democracy

Associations of the Democracy Alliance “We. Success needs diversity” were also represented and presented their concerns. Visitors were able to go to a “flag quiz” of the Volksbund Deutsche Wargräberfürsorge e. V. participate or find out about offers from the marriage and life advice center of the Archdiocese of Hamburg. In addition, the German-African cooperation association offered exciting information about projects in Togo.

With so much commitment in politics and society, it is not surprising that the event attracted numerous guests. Insights into the political work of the MPs and the opportunity to take a seat on the seats of the politicians delighted the more than 15,000 visitors who came to similar events in 2022. It remains to be seen how many people found their way to the castle this time.

Overall, the open day was a successful occasion to open the doors of democracy and make the diversity of political work tangible up close. So it can only be hoped that this tradition will continue successfully in the coming years.
