Flixtrain is planning new express trains: is Neubrandenburg finally online?
Neubrandenburg may face a new chapter in the connection to long -distance transport. The provider Flixtrain recently ordered around 30 new express trains for the proud sum of 2.4 billion euros. CEO André Schwämmlein emphasized that this is only the beginning of his long -term strategy that aims to significantly expand the route network in the next few years. "We want to connect new cities and continuously improve our offer," said Schwämmlein. But what about Neubrandenburg?
Currently there are still ambiguities as to whether our city can actually benefit from these new connections. The decision about a possible connection depends heavily on the economy and the availability of the rails. There are currently no binding plans that affect the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since 2018, the platforms in Neubrandenburg have no longer been designed for ICE or IC trains, which also makes the situation more difficult.
The state of affairs
On July 17th, the city council will discuss a resolution to extend this platform. Construction could only start in 2027. However, the hope of a better connection is on the agenda, especially since the city council has already commissioned the mayor to stand up to the M-V regional network for the recording of the Neubrandenburg-Greifswald route. In the recent past, the Neubrandenburgers also employed the fact that the Flixbus stop has not been served since September 2022, and the connection has disappeared completely from the digital map since the beginning of 2025. The reasons for this were the lack of demand, long travel times and operational challenges.
What can Flixtrain actually offer when it starts with its new trains? The company not only has a comprehensive route network, but also very cheap train tickets on offer- ideal for business and holiday trips. The trains are modernly equipped with free WiFi, guaranteed seats and storage space for luggage. Tickets can be conveniently purchased online or via the app, which means that the traveler can even save paper. Popular destinations include Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
struggle for market share
viewed in the larger picture, Flix intends to seriously compete with Flixtrain from Deutsche Bahn. You have ordered 65 new high -speed trains from the manufacturer Talgo and want to build the largest private long -distance fleet in Europe. Flix promises to guarantee all travelers a seat at no extra charge and increase the number of connections. Nevertheless, one must note that the DB Netz also controls the allocation of the slots for Flix, which could be a challenge in the future.
The competition invigorates the market and Deutsche Bahn is calm about the newly emerging competitor. According to mobility researcher Andreas Knie, there are significant differences between the long-distance bus and long-distance train market. Flix has the advantage of being more agile and being able to offer lower salaries, which lowers operating costs. Nevertheless, there are concerns that Flix could experience capacity problems on the rail, especially with regard to digitization and the existing infrastructure.
In summary, it can be said that the developments in Flixtrain could definitely arouse hope for a better connection to Neubrandenburg to long -distance transport, even if - as is so often the case in life - a lot depends on implementation and the upcoming decisions. It remains exciting how the company's plans will develop, while the city council holds on to the goals to improve the infrastructure in the region.Details | |
