Heavy rain in MV: Quiet night after a heavy storm!

In the last few days, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has had to contend with intense heavy rain. Unusual amounts of precipitation have fallen in many regions of the state since Monday evening. Schmarsow was particularly affected, where the highest rainfall of 85 liters per square meter was measured, followed by 75 liters per square meter at Barth Airport. Despite these extreme weather conditions, the police and fire departments were able to report a quiet night, with only a few special operations and no significant damage reports.

There were local floods in Rostock, with the water in the city harbor rising to the height of rubber boots. The situation was also serious on Bahnhofstrasse in Wolgast, with parts of the street flooded and the bus stop not accessible. Drivers even had to move onto the sidewalk to escape the water, which led to torn license plates and other dangerous situations.

Fire brigade in action

The volunteer fire departments of Born and Wieck on the Darß were alerted to pump out water shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday evening. The fire brigade from Tribsees also had to move out around 11:20 p.m. In Roggenhagen, near Neubrandenburg, the emergency services ensured that water was pumped out from a higher meadow to prevent the area from flooding. This proactive measure helped keep the situation under control.

In other parts of the Rostock district, firefighters also had to remove fallen trees. The situation was also tense in Neubrandenburg; Here roads had to be closed due to flooding and cellars in several places such as Rowa, Feldberg and Carpin were pumped out. The sewerage system in Demmin was overloaded and the fire department was working to relieve the strain on the infrastructure.

General situation

By Tuesday morning, the German Weather Service (DWD) had issued the highest severe weather warning level for parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This warning has now been lifted. However, heavy rain of up to 100 liters per square meter is expected for the far north-east of the country by midday. The islands of Usedom and Rügen as well as the districts of Vorpommern-Greifswald and Vorpommern-Rügen are particularly affected. There were also two weather-related accidents on the A20 during the night, which caused material damage of around 30,000 euros.

All in all, it can be seen that although the region had to contend with heavy rain, the quick and efficient operations of the fire brigade and the quiet night of the police were able to prevent major damage and chaos. Anyone affected by the flood must now plan the next steps to deal with the consequences of the flooding.
