800,000 euros for Doberaner Münster: renovation gets underway!

The restoration of the Doberan Minster continues to progress! A total of 800,000 euros have been made available for the years 2026 and 2027 to secure this magnificent and important building. This sum comes about through a successful combination of government funding, donations and sponsorships. Particular attention is paid to the federal program “Nationally Valuable Cultural Monuments”, which provides a large part of the financing, such as Baltic Sea newspaper reported.

The planned measures focus, among other things, on the renovation of the vaults in the transepts and side aisles. A key aspect will be addressing structural issues, particularly cracks in the south transept gable caused by corroded tie rods.

A piece of history in focus

Since the church was consecrated in 1368, the Doberan Minster has had not only national but also international significance. Located on the “European Brick Gothic Route”, it attracts visitors from all over the world. The preserved original furnishings are unique among the Cistercian monastery churches in Europe and make the cathedral a true treasure of cultural history.

The cathedral administration of the Bad Doberan parish is pleased about the funding commitment for the new renovation phase. The own funds come from the income of the cathedral budget, donations and sponsorships from the cathedral building association Bad Doberan e.V. It should be noted that church tax allocations and church money are used for other church projects.

Renovation progress

Rumors about the construction work had already been heard in the city: the scaffolding in the western part of the cathedral has now been dismantled and work on the new construction phase is in full swing. In total, those responsible have invested around seven million euros in the preservation and restoration of the cathedral since 2001. The current construction phase is part of a comprehensive project that has been ongoing since 2022 with a total volume of around 1.8 million euros.

The planned vault renovation in the transepts and side aisles will not only address the static problems, but also restore the wall frames in these areas. The cultural diversity that the cathedral offers will shine in a new light.

A strong signal for the care and preservation of our valuable cultural assets! Thanks to the dedicated work of many involved, Doberan Minster will continue to be a place that keeps history alive and brings people together.
