New start in Bützow's dairy: dried milk secures jobs!

The Bützow dairy, a traditional company with a history that goes back to 1889, is on the verge of a new departure. After years of decline and failed rescue attempts, the Dutch company Trouw Nutrition took the reins in March 2025 and brought a breath of fresh air into the old walls. One can no longer speak of a “healthy shrinking” here – rather, it is about a real upswing.

In recent years, the dairy has struggled not only with declining performance, but also with a number of failed investors, including well-known companies such as Nordmilch and Hochland. These failed attempts have brought the company to the edge of the abyss, but with the takeover of Trouw Nutrition there finally seems to be light at the end of the tunnel again. The parent company operates over 100 locations worldwide and thus brings valuable know-how to the region.[ NDR reports ]

New course with dry milk

The biggest change? The dairy has decided to radically change its production direction: instead of butter, dried milk is now produced. This is produced from residues from milk processing, especially from the cheese dairy sector. Up to 40 tons of dry milk are produced every day, a step that leads to the upgrading of dry milk feed for raising young animals. Interestingly, the mix of feed is individually adapted to the age of the young animals - this shows a skillful use of resources.[ Farmer's newspaper reports ]

The reassessment of the premises also affects the former employees, around 100 of whom were affected by the decline of the traditional company. After the takeover, the number of employees increased from 13 to 29, and new skilled workers are still being sought to refresh production.[ NDR informed ]

Looking into the future

With a planned expansion to include a second drying system, the dairy wants to become even more productive and serve the market better. These investments give hope that the former dairy will soon produce not only dry milk, but also animal feed. The business has been deprived for so long and it is time for the machines to purr again.[ Farmer's newspaper ]

Overall, the development of the Bützow dairy shows how important adaptability and innovative spirit are in today's world. With a fresh concept and new ideas, one of the last such businesses in the region is being carefully revitalized, and it will be exciting to see how this new start will develop.
