Rerik, Deutschland - The funeral for the renowned artist Günther Uecker took place on July 5, 2025 in the Schwerin Cathedral. Around 220 guests, including family, friends and high -ranking personalities such as Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and old Federal President Joachim Gauck , said goodbye to the important artist who died on June 10, 2025 at the age of 95. NDR reports that Uecker was known for his extraordinary relief-like nail images that brought him international recognition.
Schwesig recognized Uecker's artistic work and called him one of the most outstanding artists of his time. Uecker was deeply connected to his homeland with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and left multiple traces, including the last two of four large blue windows for the cathedral, which he had handed over in December 2024 and which bear the name "light arch". He also designed a new church roof and two church bells in the vicinity, in Rerik.
an artist with vision
Uecker was born on March 13, 1930 in Wendorf near Schwerin and grew up on the Baltic Sea Peninsula Wustrow. From the 1950s he settled in Düsseldorf and became a member of the group Zero , which was founded by artists such as Heinz Mack and Otto Piene . Uecker's works are known for their dynamic tension caused by the arrangement of the nails and playing with light. The gallery on the Dom offers a comprehensive insight into its artistic work and explains how its pre-grafikes create special effects by changing light.
Uecker received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2023. His commitment to the art and his examination of political issues shaped his work from the 1980s when he started addressing socially relevant questions in his works.
