State Zoo Day 2025: Free entry and exciting activities for families!

A really good event is just around the corner! On Friday, August 15, 2025, the 15th State Zoo Day will take place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Under the motto “Experience biodiversity”, 16 zoos and animal parks open their doors and offer free entry for children and young people up to 14 years of age. Dr. Tim Schikora, chairman of the state zoo association and director of Schwerin Zoo, is pleased about the variety of creative activities that await visitors.

The participating institutions have come up with a colorful program that includes both educational and entertaining elements. For example, Rostock Zoo has an information mobile and surprise boxes on the topic of sustainability. The German Maritime Museum in Stralsund also doesn't miss out and organizes family rallies and a visit to the penguins, while the Müritzeum in Waren invites you to take a discovery tour of the center's green roof.

Commitment to species protection

Zoos in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are much more than just places for animal residents. They are strongly committed to nature conservation and preserving biodiversity. It's not for nothing that around 3 million visitors come to our zoological gardens every year. This shows what an important role they play in environmental education and as extracurricular learning locations. “We have a clear focus on environmental education and species protection,” emphasizes Minister Dr. Till Backhaus. Thanks to good cooperation between the state government and the state zoo association, a unique concept is being pushed forward in Germany to promote these topics.

Dr. Schikora emphasizes that the daily services of the 18 member zoological institutions are of great importance. Scientifically managed zoos make a decisive contribution to species protection, as was also discussed in a technical discussion in the Committee for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. It is important that the zoo enclosures think about species-appropriate breeding and the preservation of endangered species and also team up with private breeders, as Jörg Junhold, director of the Leipzig Zoological Garden, emphasized at the time.

A variety of activities for all age groups

A look at the individual activities shows that there is something to discover for every age group. Schwerin Zoo organizes a research camp where young guests can learn about, among other things, Asiatic lions. The Marlow Bird Park offers children's guided tours on the topic of species protection and the Wismar Zoo provides information about invasive species and endangered domestic animal breeds.
