Big festival at the Racing Roland: historic trains and exciting attractions!
Next weekend the island of Rügen will be the scene of a memorable celebration! The “Open Day” will take place on June 14th and 15th between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Putbus train station. Organized by the Rügensche BäderBahn, better known as the “Rasende Roland”, visitors can look forward to exciting hours. Admission is free and your physical well-being is also taken care of.
The Racing Roland is more than just a track; It is a real landmark of the island, and District Administrator Stefan Kerth emphasizes the importance of this historic railway. The steam locomotive-powered narrow-gauge railway, which has been able to travel along the picturesque route between Putbus, Binz, Sellin and Baabe to Göhren since 1895, has a gauge of 750 mm and reaches a top speed of 30 km/h. This makes it a popular public transport option in Rügen, with trips from Lauterbach Mole also possible on around 180 days a year.
Exciting offers
What exactly can guests expect at the festival? During a tour of the operating facilities, visitors can not only explore the new workshop, which was put into operation in 2024, but also visit the water tower with viewing platform and the wagon hall. A mini train is available for the little guests, and the model train is sure to make many eyes light up.
In addition, historic trains run to Binz during the festival, and locomotive rides give visitors the taste of sitting behind the wheel of a locomotive themselves. Particularly noteworthy are the trolley rides, which offer a completely new experience. The Vulcan Lokmotive 53 Mh locomotive pulls the Rü.K.B.'s brown passenger cars, which makes the nostalgic flair perfect.
A look back into history
The history of Rasender Roland goes back to the opening of the first route from Putbus to Binz on July 22, 1895. Over the years, the railway has developed into a tourist attraction and connects the island's most famous seaside resorts. Historic steam locomotives and wagons that are almost a hundred years old are an integral part of the experience and are very popular.
In total, the route of the Rasender Roland stretches over 24.1 kilometers and is an important connection to the tourist hotspots on Rügen. Anyone who uses the train can look forward to picturesque views and become part of a very special part of Rügen's culture.
All further information about the timetable for special trips and the historic trains is available on the official website of the Rügenschen BäderBahn. Take the opportunity to experience a piece of history up close and enjoy the idyll of the island of Rügen. This is certainly no coincidence!
