Red card for Wamser: Germany suffers EM debacle against Sweden

A bitter blow for the German women's football team: In the last group game of the Weuro 2025, the selection of national coach Christian Wück is subject to the Swedes 1: 4. This defeat not only means the highest European championship bankruptcy since 1993, but also shakes the future of the team in the tournament series.

The game started promising for the German team. Carlotta Wamser, who had moved into the team for the injured captain Giulia Gwinn, brought the DFB team 1-0 in the lead in the 7th minute. However, the joy did not last long: Stina Blackstenius achieved compensation for Sweden in the 12th minute. The game quickly increased in intensity, and despite some good chances, including Jule Brand and Klara Bühl, the 2-1 for Sweden fell in the 22nd minute through Smilla Holmberg, who was preceded by an unfortunate attempt at defense from Sarai Linder. But the low point for the German came in the 31st minute.

red for Wamser

In this crucial phase, Carlotta Wamser saw the red card after a hand defense. This decision of the referee not only led to a dismissal, but also to a penalty that Fridolina Rolfö converted confidently and brought Sweden 3-1. The outnumbered gave the DFB team a chance to reduce the pressure and had to tackle personnel changes. Trainer Wück tried to act compensationally against the Swedish offensive with an adaptation on the left.

Klara Bühl showed up after the game despite the disappointment and praised the character of her teammates. While the team is already preparing for the upcoming quarter-final game against the first table of Group D, very likely France, the DFB has to start, especially in the mental area, so as not to go back in the knockout round. The game will take place in Basel on Saturday at 9:00 p.m.

A look into the future

For the Germans, the air becomes thin after this defeat. Nevertheless, you can already look at the upcoming challenges. In the background there are plans for the 2023 women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where Germany meets Morocco, Colombia and South Korea in Group H. From there you hope for new impulses for the team and a return to the old strength. The first game will take place on July 24, 2023 against Morocco - and hopefully with a better balance.

The German women's team has shown in the past that it can bloom in critical moments. Nevertheless, the performance against Sweden will flow into the analyzes as a warning signal in order to be prepared for the coming games and tournaments. The hope remains: a good hand in the coming games, the team might soon be able to rehabilitate.
