Tire slashers are wreaking havoc in Prenzlau – again!
Last night, more precisely on the night of June 17th, the peace on Winterfeldtstrasse in Prenzlau was disturbed by another incident of property damage. A parked Skoda KAROQ was tampered with and unknown perpetrators slashed a tire. The estimated damage is around 200 euros. According to witnesses, two passers-by heard a loud bang and a subsequent whistle around midnight before they noticed two people quickly escaping from the vehicle. The criminal police immediately initiated searches, but so far without success. The investigators are calling on possible other witnesses to come forward because there is still no trace of the perpetrators. This is not the first incident of this kind; The repeated tire-slashing operations in the city cast a worrying light on security in Prenzlau. Northern Courier reports on the urgency of the investigation.
The criminal police have also been active in another case of property damage since November 2023. In this incident, a 21-year-old man from Prenzlau is suspected of having deliberately damaged several cars on Grabowstrasse after an event in the Uckerseehalle. He kicked off the wing mirror of a Dacia and smashed the window of the driver's door of a VW Polo, causing significant total damage of around 3,000 euros. Here, too, alert citizens intervened after hearing loud noises. If you look at current crime trends, there seems to be a slight increase in the frequency of property damage, which is making people unsettled. Brandenburg Police provides information about the ongoing investigation.
Crime in Germany in focus
Overall, the current police crime statistics show that the development of crime in Germany is difficult to assess. In 2024 there was a decrease of 1.7% to around 5.84 million recorded crimes. The main reason for this decline is the partial legalization of cannabis, which led to fewer registered cannabis crimes. However, there is also an increase in crimes that affect citizens' sense of security. Important crimes include theft and brutality crimes, although the frequency of such crimes is high in some federal states, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria. While the clearance rate remains at 58%, many citizens still see an increasing threat in their everyday lives. Statista confirms this trend and paints a realistic picture of our security situation.
Together with the criminal police and local citizens, it is hoped that the repeated damage to property in Prenzlau can soon be contained. It is important to remain vigilant and have attentive neighbors who can act quickly in such cases. The local community is called upon to restore safety and order on the streets.
