Sukow receives 24/7 supermarket: A new food protection for the community!

In Sukow, a small town with around 1,700 inhabitants, the first newly built 24/7 supermarket in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will open its doors on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The Tante Enso market is offered directly at Dorfplatz 21 and finally restores the previous shopping gap in the village that has existed since the last shopping opportunity was lost in 2016. Mayor Horst-Dieter Keding (SPD) emphasizes that the revival of retail in the town was a matter of the heart and the positive reactions from the population show the great interest in this project.

The opening of the market is the result of a long journey. Since 2021, contact has been made with the Tante Enso cooperative, which is supported by the citizens. The realization of the market was finally started with the sale of 370 cooperative shares at 100 euros each. Setbacks and delays, such as lawsuits, repeatedly took the wind out of the sails of those involved. But the tireless efforts of the citizens and the commitment of the community have paid off.

Community and engagement

The great commitment of the Sukow population, which is already reflected in the collection of over 300 participation certificates, is an important sign of how interested the village community is in returning to a local shopping point. The people of Sukow regularly offered their support long before construction began. A common goal has brought citizens together and shows how important a supermarket is for social cohesion in the region.

Supermarkets in rural areas are often not only shopping places, but also social meeting places. How Supermarket Inside emphasizes, they are often the last point of contact for social contacts, especially in areas where the distances between people are large and the migration of young people from the villages is not insignificant.

A market for the future

Although the Tante Enso market is open 24 hours a day, there are initially limited opening hours for non-cooperative customers. The market plans to carry a diverse selection of foods. However, the start will be with a limited range of fruit and vegetables and the temporary exclusion of some products, such as nut products and condoms, due to technical problems with cooling and air conditioning.

The opening will take place on Thursday June 19th with celebrations that will also attract political figures. The musician Jörg Klingohr, known as Bauer Korl, also provides entertainment.

Thus, Sukow will not only be a new place for delicious food, but also a place that strengthens the community and maintains social exchange. The community of Sukow and everyone involved can look forward to a new era of shopping and togetherness that offers hope for an exciting future. After attempts to reopen have repeatedly failed in the past, the Tante Enso market will hopefully last and act as the new heart of the village.
