Dike construction in Neuhaus: Flood protection protects streets and nature!

A dike construction project that has been under discussion for many years is currently being implemented in the tranquil region around Neuhaus. Flood protection, which is becoming increasingly important in the area, is being pushed forward by closing the gap between the Sudedeich and the right Krainkedeich. “It is important, but also expensive,” says the chairman of the Neuhauser Dike Association, Heinrich Hauel, underlining the challenges that await planners when building a dike. The measures not only have a significant impact on the landscape, but also on the flora and fauna Northern Courier reported.

The district road between Preten in Lower Saxony and an adjacent Mecklenburg area is currently completely closed. This closure is necessary because the road is raised to ensure the passage of vehicles in the event of a disaster. At this year's autumn dyke show, Hauel and his colleague Sven Nakajew were already moving on a sandy road that was around three meters above the previous street level. An impressive 100,000 cubic meters of sand were delivered for this - a mammoth task that was completed in numerous truckloads.

Progress after years of discussions

The current construction phase is almost 1.5 kilometers long, with only 100 meters being the actual dike. Planning for this project began in 2009, and many discussions and round tables followed. There were a total of 13 discussion rounds in which citizens, planners and decision-makers exchanged ideas. The planning approval decision was ultimately made on November 28, 2022, and the individual steps for implementation had accumulated since 2009.

A look at the main project shows that, in addition to the expansion, the construction of new flood dikes on the Sude and Krainke is also planned. This contributes to the long-term protection of the region and is an answer to the increasing challenges posed by nature. The responsible authority, the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), has taken responsibility for this. The plan also provides for an improvement in environmental conditions and must of course meet the necessary environmental requirements, as an environmental impact assessment is required. Further information about the plans is available online at NLWKN visible.

Heinrich Hauel is optimistic: “We are confident that the route will be open again in December.” So while the applications and planning were a long-term undertaking, the people in the region have a positive outlook for the future. The construction will not only improve the traffic situation, but also show that progress is certainly possible after years of discussions.
