Tire warehouse in Grundshagen burns: Fire brigade fights against poisonous smoke!

On June 14, 2025, a huge fire broke out in a tire camp in Grundshagen near Klütz, in the Northwest Mecklenburg district. Local residents had alerted the fire brigade around noon because a massive column of smoke quickly formed in the sky. This was so striking that the Schwerin control center immediately published a hazard report. Robert Jonas, the head of operations of the Klütz volunteer fire brigade, described the situation as worrying, since the fire generated allegedly poisonous smoke that was visible over large distances.

In order to warn the population of the possible dangers, the first group leader became active and informed the residents about the Warnapp Nina. This was crucial, because smoky air can quickly become a health risk, especially in residential areas. The fire that was completely deleted within two hours was prevented by the rapid reaction of the fire brigades used to prevent it from spreading to an adjacent warehouse and a photovoltaic system.

joint efforts by the fire brigade

The fire brigade Klütz fire brigade, but also the fire brigades from Boltenhagen, Elmenhorst and Kalkhorst, were in use. Their community efforts once again showed how important a quick mobilization of forces is in such emergency situations. In addition, farmers provided the neighboring farms by helping them to pull the smoldering tires apart. This was essential to quickly get the residual dangers under control and prevent the flames from spreading to other buildings.

In similar situations, there is often increased smoke development, as can be observed again and again in other cities. An example of this is a current incident in Munich, where toxic smoke was caused by a fire on a construction site in the city center. The Munich fire brigade was on site with numerous emergency services and was able to control everyone after about two hours. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but this incident shows how important preventive measures are in fire protection to protect the population.

statistics and outlook

statistics on fires in Germany show that a comprehensive overview is more important than ever to optimize preventive measures in fire protection. According to Feuertrutz , there are often no extensive data that could help improve the risk of danger. Every year there are numerous fire events that are often shaped by similar challenges as we saw in Grundshagen and Munich.

The events of today in Grundshagen are reminiscent of the fact that fires can be created quickly and can cause great damage. But the cooperation of local fire brigades and the support of the communities are crucial to prevent worse things. In the best case, the majority of the population remains unaffected by such events and can rely on the active support of their fire brigade.
