Hörner sounds in Wismar: Celebration for the day of the saile 2025!
Wismar, Deutschland - On June 25, 2025, the “Day of Sea wheels” will take place in Wismar (Northwest Mecklenburg district). This day of action, which has been launched by the International Sea shipping company IMO for 14 years, has the goal of appreciating the valuable work of the seafarers and drawing attention to the often difficult working conditions. At 6 p.m., various ships, including the freight, excursion and traditional ships, will make the ship horn sound three times in order to draw attention to the concern.
This year's motto "My harassment -free ship" emphasizes the need to work against bullying, abuse and harassment at sea. It is a call to the maritime industry to ensure an environment in which seafarers feel safe and respected. But why is that so crucial? A recent study by Yale University on behalf of the International Transport Federation Federation (ITF) shows that mental health of seafarers is seriously endangered. Among the respondents stated that they had had suicidal thoughts in the past two weeks.
The challenges on board
Isolation from the family, high expectations of the superiors and long missions shape the life of many seafarers. The study has shown that every seventh seafarer suffers from depression. It is particularly striking that 88% of the men surveyed are, with a large part of the Philippines and Western Europe. According to the ITF, this mixed crew composition can increase the challenges on board. Shipping companies are increasingly receiving criticism for inadequate training and inadequate support for their employees in relation to mental health.
Anne Engelhardt, a research assistant at the University of Göttingen, emphasizes the importance of safe working conditions at sea. In the context of global crises and attempts to curtail the supply chain law, the creation of a harassment -free environment remains of great relevance. Engelhardt points out that changes in maritime culture are necessary to take the pressure from the seafarers and to ensure fair treatment.
a strong sign by the sea
The action day in Wismar offers a platform to draw attention to these serious problems and to set an example against grievances. The ship horn will not only be an acoustic sign of appreciation, but also an appeal to everyone to actively work to improve working conditions. In view of the knowledge of the Yale study, it is clear that in order to promote the mental health of seafarers, more fundamental changes in the industry must be implemented.
This is not only celebrated in Wismar, but also thinks about the maritime challenges that the crew members of our ships face every day. It is a day to stimulate the rights and needs of the seafarers - because with all the adversities at sea, you should receive the appreciation you deserve.
