Plastic waste on the brick area: Administration fails - politics raises the alarm!

In Schwerin-Lankow, the increasing flash around the brick area ensures displeasure. The plastic waste on it has been an issue in urban politics for over two years. The problem is not new: Easy packaging from the recycling company Alba repeatedly ended up in the water, due to hungry crows and seagulls that caused the garbage. Despite Alba's promise to take care of the Situation, the garbage is still a problem. Manfred Strauss from the group independent citizens/FDP commented critically and urgently demands effective action of the administration.

The city council plans to take a on-site appointment at the Alba branch at Ziegeleiweg 12 on June 17, 2025. Daniel Meyer-Kohlstock, the head of the Environmental Service, promised to participate. Stephan Martini from the City and Culture Protection campaign describes the environmental situation as a "political and ecological scandal first rank" and criticized the inactivity of the administration.

The way to solutions

In April 2025, Alba carried out a cleaning campaign in which around a third of the damage were removed and about 50 sacks collected garbage. Further collective inserts are set for the rest of the year that are coordinated with the environmental authority. However, this was only done after repeated pressure by the city representatives, who were already responsible for the administration in the main committee.

Despite these efforts, the topic of plastic waste was repeatedly discussed. Citizens reported on the unsustainable conditions, while reporters from Schwerin.news documented the situation directly on site. Despite the storage of waste in a covered hall that has been intended as a measure against the spread by birds since 2023, environmental pollution remains a big issue. The controls show that the existing problems are still not solved.

political reactions and responsibilities

The city administration has already taken measures within the framework of the Federal Immission Protection Act to improve recycling. In the discussion, the demand is that fines should be imposed in order to underpin the urgency of the problem.

In Europe, the problems with plastic waste are not unique. According to a report by the European Parliament, energy recovery is the most common method for the disposal of plastic waste on the continent. Nevertheless, the recycling quota is terrifyingly low. Around 22 million tons of plastic came into soils, rivers and seas in 2019, and this trend is forecast to double until 2060. This not only has an impact on the environment, but also leads to high losses in economic terms, since the emissions from plastic production are steadily increasing.

The situation on the brickle area in Schwerin is a clear example of how persistent inactivity and inefficient recycling solutions affect both the environment and the quality of life of the citizens. The coming days and in particular the on-site appointment could be directional to finally stop the garbage misery along the pond.
