Schwerin celebrates: insights into politics at the day of the open state parliament!

Schwerin, Deutschland - on the weekend of June 13th to 15th, 2025, Schwerin experienced a special kind: the castle festival, a highlight that was accompanied by the celebrated appointment of the Schwerin residence ensemble for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the event, the former Fürstenschloss turned into a stage full of cultural diversity and historical productions.

The opening of the castle festival took place on Friday evening with the impressive light and laser scene "Son et lumière". This spectacular show, inspired by similar events at Chambord Castle in France, combined emotional music with breathtaking projections and was told by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. On Saturday, visitors experienced the show "Sound of Germany", which offered music from Bach to Kraftwerk and also enhanced the festival.

The Sunday was all about the “Open Day” in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament. Karola Friedrich and Horst Otto were able to look forward to the invitation of the Landtag President Birgit Hesse (SPD), who warmly welcomed the visitors to the castle in the castle. "It was a great experience," said Otto enthusiastically, while many guests took the opportunity to look behind the scenes of state politics.

The participants not only researched the plenary hall and the office of the Landtag president, but also enjoyed the view of the city. In a convivial atmosphere, visitors had the opportunity to exchange ideas with MPs and to learn more about the work of the committees and political groups. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig was also present and underlined the importance of this open format.

The castle festival also offered a variety of program items, including guided tours to the tea pavilion, insights into the castle museum and live performances in the castle inner courtyard. The special attraction was a demonstration of the impressive turning bridge, which aroused the interest of many visitors. In total, the state administration counted around 15,000 guests on Sunday, and Birgit Hesse noticed the positive mood and the great encouragement that the event experienced.

In parallel to the festival, an art and craftsman market with over 40 exhibitors organized from Friday to Sunday. On these days, people from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. were able to admire a wide range of handmade products, from glass art to individually designed jewelry.

The castle festival combined historical elements, closeness to the citizen and festive joy, which not only delighted visitors, but also impressively brought the rich history and culture of the region to life. It is therefore not surprising that the residence ensemble Schwerin, consisting of over 30 historical buildings, squares and gardens, was celebrated as the third world heritage in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is now a valuable enrichment for the cultural heritage.

The combination of politics, culture and history became an unforgettable event in the state capital, which will certainly live on in many memories of the guests.
