Malchin receives free fiber optic connection for 2,000 households!

In Malchin the motto is now: The future is tangible! After the official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday on the market square, fiber optic expansion has begun for almost 2,000 households in the city. Representatives from Telekom, DrahtglasPlus GmbH and regional partners have joined forces to create a sustainable network. The joint venture, which emerged from Deutsche Telekom and IFM Investors, is taking the leap into the digital age. Nordkurier reports that the FiberPlus network is open to all telecommunications providers - a good opportunity for residents!

Particularly noteworthy is the free home connection for everyone who chooses a fiber optic tariff during the expansion phase. Quite an incentive to turn to the new technology. For customers who want to get a taste of it after the work has been completed, there will be regular costs for the house connection, which at Telekom will be 799.95 euros.

Technical details and challenges

As is often the case with new projects, the journey so far hasn't been entirely problem-free. Telekom is currently laying fiber optic cables in existing empty pipes. However, the availability and the street areas served have often been unclear in recent months. For example, one resident pointed out that despite the hybrid connection, the promised speed of 16 MB was not available. The real measurements only showed around 4 MB, which was a very frustrating experience for those affected, as became clear in a query to Telekom. Information about when the promised speed will be available was still missing. Telekom helps has taken up these concerns and hopes for clarification.

Fiber optic expansion in Germany is generally very important, especially for rural regions. Today, the goal is to be equipped with fiber-optic gigabit networks across the board by 2030. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture emphasizes that this expansion is crucial for the attractiveness and future viability of rural areas.

Future prospects

However, with the current fiber optic ratio of only 22.8% of households actually connected, it shows how much work still lies ahead of us. Further steps will be necessary to address the challenges of expansion in rural areas. High investment costs and longer expansion times due to greater distances are just some of the hurdles that need to be overcome.

The project in Malchin can be seen as a small but important step in the right direction. Rural regions in particular can benefit from such initiatives and flourish digitally. It will be exciting to see how the situation will develop in the coming months and what progress Telekom and its partners will make.
