Citizens of Malchin demand a safe pedestrian crossing to the city harbor!
There are currently several infrastructural issues under discussion in Malchin that affect both cyclists and pedestrians. The focus is particularly on federal highway 104, which is known for its traffic situation and is now highlighting both a cycle path renewal and the demand for a safe pedestrian crossing to the city harbor.
At a residents' meeting, the need for a pedestrian crossing over the B 104 to the popular “Koesters Eck” contact point was discussed again. However, the road construction authority has so far seen no need for this additional crossing point. Building authority manager Arno Harpeng referred to existing options: There is a traffic light intersection at the post office and a pedestrian island at the gas station, which are considered inadequate for many pedestrians. Residents agree that the route to the post office crossing is too far for many and that the pedestrian island is potentially dangerous because it lies behind a curve.
Cycle path renewed
At the same time, the cycle path along the B 104 between Remplin and Malchin is being renewed. This measure, which is being carried out by Georg Koch GmbH from Malchin, will begin on May 6th with construction of the construction site and the work is expected to be completed by mid-June. During the construction phase, the cycle path will be completely closed, which is likely to pose some challenges for cycling traffic. Daytime construction sites are set up, with traffic controlled in one lane using traffic lights. This measure is not only a response to the state of the infrastructure, but also an important sign of the safety of road users.
The total length of the construction section extends over around 4.3 kilometers, with construction costs amounting to around 170,000 euros, most of which are financed from funds from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It remains to be seen whether the measures taken are sufficient to ensure the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians in local traffic and to meet the different needs of citizens.
A strong concern of citizens
The Malchin residents' dissatisfaction with the current security situation is clearly noticeable. In discussions, they expressed their lack of understanding of the road construction authority's attitude. Concerns about pedestrian protection and accessibility to the city harbor are looming and are becoming even more relevant due to the upcoming construction work on the B 104. How will the city administration respond to the demands and can a solution for pedestrian traffic be found soon? One thing is certain: Malchin residents want a safe and welcoming infrastructure that meets their needs.
