An exciting folk festival weekend is just around the corner in Malchow! From July 2nd to 5th, the city on Lake Malchower will be celebratory in celebration of its oldest local festival, which is now part of Germany's intangible cultural heritage. The colorful hustle and bustle is taking place for the 172nd time, with tradition and community at the forefront. The festive days begin with the opening on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the monastery church, where the choir Mee(h)rklang from Waren will provide musical highlights.

A special highlight of the folk festival is the performance of the historical play “Der Stülpner von Malchow”, which will be shown on Sunday at 11 a.m. on the Old Market in front of the town hall. Rehearsals for this piece have been going on since May, with the dress rehearsal taking place on Thursday. The piece, which comes from Wolfgang Henkel alias Gustav Nagel, revolves around the character Karl Stülpner, who is known as the Robin Hood of the Erzgebirge. The topic of poaching is dealt with in the historical context of 1820, taking the audience back in time. About half of the state representatives will take part this year, making the action exciting and lively.

Cultural heritage and community spirit

Since its entry in December 2014 in the German UNESCO Commission's nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage, the Malchower Volksfest has not only gained in importance, but has also strengthened the local community. Numerous companies, sports and cultural clubs as well as citizens from the region take part in the big parade and show historical and creative facets of the city during the celebratory parade.

On Friday morning, the youngest visitors can look forward to the children's festival parade, an event that is even older than the folk festival itself. Hundreds of children in imaginative costumes not only make parents and grandparents smile, but also delight the numerous guests who celebrate the festival in a festive atmosphere on the folk festival square. In addition to the parades, there is a colorful supporting program with fairgrounds and other attractions that provide the best entertainment.
