Military convoys rolling through Western Pomerania: Pay attention to traffic requirements!

In the coming days there will be a lot of action on the streets of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Military units of the Bundeswehr have announced that they will take part in an exercise that will last until September 18, 2025. The large-scale convoy starts in Torgelow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and heads south, using federal highways 20 and 11 to reach the destination. This exercise is intended to simulate moving a large convoy of vehicles across public roads and highways. It is particularly important that military convoys are not allowed to be overtaken on state and federal roads and that a safe distance from the vehicles should be maintained, as NDR reports.

But the whole thing is not just a one-time event. In May 2025, another convoy with around 150 vehicles from the 164 Special Pioneer Regiment from Husum rolled through the region. This maneuver took the soldiers to Werdeck in Saxony. What is interesting is that the marching columns were divided into several groups and traveled at different times in order to ensure the greatest possible security. The same applies here: The routes remain secret for security reasons, but it can be assumed that road users should pay increased attention if they spot military vehicles. You can't expect a lot of driving fun because the columns can be up to a kilometer long, the Nordkurier informs.

Military on German streets

The increasing military presence on the streets cannot be overlooked and is closely related to current geopolitical developments. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has ensured that German and NATO troops are once again increasingly visible in public spaces. Germany has long since developed from a potential front-line state into a logistical hub for NATO troops. Military transports now take place not only within Germany, but also through specially established corridors. Particularly noteworthy is the Quadriga series of exercises, in which units of Panzer Brigade 21 relocated to Lithuania in September 2023 and then returned to Germany in impressive military convoys up to two kilometers long, as Soldier-and-Technology describes.

These developments are a sign of the times. More and more military exercises and transports dominate the street landscape. Drivers are therefore well advised to drive particularly carefully and keep a good distance from military vehicles. Finally, the visibility of the Bundeswehr on the streets can be interpreted as a sign of security and preparation, especially in uncertain times. The upcoming exercises and convoys show that the Bundeswehr and its allies are well equipped and are maintaining their operational readiness.
