Neubrandenburg's literature center is becoming creative under new management!
A new wind is blowing in the Neubrandenburg Literature Center! Under the direction of Andrea Werner, who has gained extensive experience in the Koeppen Archive at the University of Greifswald and in the Parchim City Museum, the center will get off to a fresh start on February 24, 2026 with a look at important literary history. The focus will be on Rudi Strahl, who wrote “The Blue from Heaven” more than a year before his death - a work that touched a nerve of the times at the time and is also included in Magdalena Schrefer's new publication. Her book is also entitled “The Blue from Heaven” and is scheduled to be published next year, further strengthening the connection to the region's literary scene.
The literature center, which was founded in 1971 and is located in the Brigitte Reimann Literature House, has developed over the years into an important cultural meeting place. It not only offers a varied program for citizens interested in literature and reading, but also maintains the regional literary heritage and preserves the estates of important writers such as Hans Fallada, Brigitte Reimann and Rudi Strahl. In 2020 it was also awarded the Hartmut Vogel Prize, which underlines its central role in the literary landscape. According to the Literature Center website literaturzentrum-nb.de aims to promote literary creation and reading culture.
A fresh approach for the future
Andrea Werner has set herself the goal of focusing on more young people and more diverse perspectives. “I sense great interest in the city and region for joint projects,” says Werner. To this end, she is planning collaborations with the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis MV and the “Wortwächter” project in order to reach a broader audience. Furthermore, a permanent exhibition in the Literaturhaus is intended to commemorate the writer Brigitte Reimann and the archive of regional literary history is accessible to researchers, teachers and students.
The ambitious director also wants to involve interns in order to get young people interested in literature. “We want to make the voices of the present audible and not let GDR literature be forgotten,” explains Werner, relying on a lively exchange with those interested in literature. An upcoming event taking place on February 24th will include Frank Stegemann's reading of "Daniel Druskat" as well as additional readings with Annette Schuhmann and Magdalena Schrefer.
A look ahead
With the annual motto “The Blue from Heaven” for 2026, the literature center would like to build a bridge between the past and the present. Andrea Werner is aware that Neubrandenburg and the entire region contain unique literary treasures that are just waiting to be discovered. It will be exciting to see how cultural life develops under your new leadership and what new impulses the events and projects will provide.
