New life in Röbel: old restaurant becomes refugee accommodation!

There will soon be reason to celebrate in Röbel: From 2026, an empty restaurant will be converted into accommodation for refugees. The renovation is taking place at Hohe Straße 19, where the former “Zur Unit” restaurant will be converted into shared accommodation for up to 48 people. This step was announced by Michael Löffler from the Mecklenburg Lake District district in the main committee. The new two- and four-bed rooms should be ready for occupancy in the first quarter of 2026, with operations starting on May 1st. Mainly refugees from Ukraine who are assigned through the country are settled here. NDR also reports that interested citizens have already had the opportunity to view the new premises.

But what does this mean for the region? Mayor Matthias Radtke emphasizes how important integration and hospitality are. Only recently, refugees from Ukraine arrived in Röbel and were integrated here. In order to make the start easier for the new residents, an operator is being sought for the accommodation who will take on various tasks. This includes orientation in the area, support in dealing with authorities and teaching basic German skills. The integration of refugees should also be supported by help from civil society, which has already worked well in the past. Nordkurier reports on the specific measures that are being sought to support the new residents.

Protect and integrate

The creation of safe accommodation is of great importance, especially for more vulnerable groups among refugees. With the federal initiative “Protection of refugees in refugee accommodation”, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has been pursuing the goal of providing special support to people in need of protection since 2016. Criteria such as orientation in the new environment, advice on rights and obligations and information on the labor market are part of these protection concepts. Particularly vulnerable groups, such as minors and women, should receive special attention in the new accommodation. BMBF emphasizes the minimum standards that have been in effect since 2016 and are continually being developed.

The upcoming opening of the new accommodation in Röbel shows that the region is willing to take responsibility and offer refugees a temporary home. This not only means a new start for those affected, but also represents an enrichment for the community. The region's experiences and the existing support initiatives show the potential that lies in this integration - so that the new residents arrive well and can settle in quickly.
