Reading Day 2025: Children on a journey of discovery to the moon in Neustrelitz!

In Neustrelitz, science becomes an experience! On November 21, 2025, the DLR_School_Lab of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) took part in the nationwide reading day for the fifth time. Under the motto “Our Moon – a cosmic journey of knowledge,” 23 students from the third and fourth grades took part in this exciting event.

The teachers in the student laboratory presented texts on lunar research in two 25-minute blocks. The lectures were accompanied by impressive image projections that gave the young listeners a visual impression of the moon and its secrets.

Participation stations for little researchers

During the break, the children had the opportunity to get active at three hands-on stations. These stations revolved around the topics of lunar gravity, celestial bodies in the solar system and the different phases of the moon as well as eclipses. Here the young researchers were able to directly apply and deepen their newly acquired knowledge.

A highlight of the event was the subsequent moon quiz, in which the best participants were awarded prizes. In addition, all classes received informative moon posters and other teaching material to further consolidate what they had learned in class.

The students' great interest in the event has led to another similar event being planned for December 5, 2025. This shows how important such initiatives are in awakening a fascination for science and technology among young people.

DLR_School_Lab – educational and exciting

The DLR_School_Lab is much more than just a reading day. In collaboration with the Technical University of Dortmund, it enables students from the 7th grade to experience research up close. The students come into contact with modern devices and system technologies that can be used in various subjects. For example, TU scientists work closely with DLR to develop innovative technologies such as microcapsules for space suits or to construct robust robots that can be used in medicine and space research.

The DLR_School_Lab school program complements scientific and technical lessons and offers teachers the opportunity to use excellent materials for their lessons. An exciting offer is the visit to DELTA, the Dortmund electron storage ring facility, which is of particular interest for physics courses.

A look outside the box

But it's not just in Neustrelitz that something is happening in the education sector. At the Ruhr University Bochum, students from grade five have the opportunity to take part in around 100 projects that are spread across different departments. Both humanities and social sciences as well as natural sciences and technology topics are covered, which gives students broad access to the world of science.

The school laboratory in Bochum offers an all-round package for anyone interested in learning about experimenting and trying things out. Both individual and group registrations are possible, which enables flexible participation in the exciting projects.

So if you think that science is rather dry, you should take a look into the world of school laboratories! Not only is knowledge imparted here, but genuine interest and enthusiasm for natural sciences is aroused.
