Bright blue skies, a good mood and a common goal – the planting campaign in the Teterower Heidbergen on December 8, 2025 was a complete success. Around ten members of the Teterow youth fire brigade, supported by adult comrades and the Hegerings Teterow as well as district forester Stefan Blumrich, pitched in vigorously. Over 300 young trees, including beech and oak seedlings, found their new home in the ground that day.

Steve Maibohm, board member of the Hegering Teterow, emphasized the team spirit and commitment of all the helpers during the joint effort. “It’s simply impressive how everyone works together,” says Maibohm. A small downside was a short-term deployment by the fire brigade, which had to temporarily interrupt the action, but quickly returned to continue the good cause.

Forest conversion for the future

The need for this planting campaign became clear due to the damage to old trees caused by storms and bark beetles. The goal is clear: a climate-stable conversion of the forest is needed! “We have to ensure that our forests are prepared for the future,” emphasizes Maibohm. These new plantings are not only a question of nature conservation, but also an investment in the future, as can be read on the Tree Planting Society's website. This initiative promotes tree planting activities and provides a directory for committed individuals and organizations who also want to support the forest.

The value of tree planting goes far beyond reforestation. CO₂ is stored, the water balance in the soil is improved and habitats are created for numerous animal and plant species. This all contributes to heat reduction in cities and general noise reduction. Reforestation projects are not only locally important, but also part of a global concern like this WWF emphasized.

Focus on volunteer work

During the planting campaign, the helpers were provided with hot drinks and lard sandwiches, which further fueled the good mood. All the seedlings were in the ground by lunchtime, which gave a sense of satisfaction not only to the organizers but also to the helpers. The focus now is on caring for the newly planted trees so that they can grow into robust, climate-stable habitats.

In times of climate change, such actions are of great importance. “We should all do our part to reforest and protect our forests,” appeals Maibohm. These locally anchored initiatives are a step in the right direction and show how much joy it is to actively contribute to improving nature.

The future of forests lies in the hands of the community. If you would also like to get involved, you can visit the website Tree Planting Society all the information you need to become part of this important cause.
