Snow chaos in MV: Over 100 accidents due to black ice today!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, drivers are currently facing a demanding challenge: With snow and slippery conditions, the conditions on the roads have deteriorated drastically. On November 24, 2025, around 60 slippery-related accidents were reported, including two serious injuries and nine other people who were slightly injured. This is reported by NDR.de, which also reports a serious head-on collision between two vehicles near Bützow, the exact number of injuries of which is still unclear.

In this context, the police clearly warned: “It’s banging every minute.” Another incident that illustrates the dangers occurred near Weitendorf when a box truck slid into a school bus. One child suffered a shock, but the driver was slightly injured. Accidents also occurred in various places outside of Bützow. For example, a vehicle drove off the road near Boizenburg.

Accidents and traffic disruptions

In total, over 100 slippery-related accidents were reported. Another incident also occurred during a winter service accident in Parchim when a company vehicle slipped into parked cars. Bad news also from the A20 motorway, which was closed for several hours between Grevesmühlen and Schönberg after a rear-end collision. In addition, a tram jumped off the tracks in Rostock, which led to a replacement bus service. There were also several ice-icing accidents in the Schwerin area.

What is particularly worrying is the fact that many drivers did not adjust their speed and were often without suitable winter tires. This is shown by cases such as that of a 28-year-old driver in Pasewalk who was driving without winter tires and caused damage of around 10,000 euros. Clearly a situation that endangers not only the driver in question, but also the passengers.

Advice for safe driving

An adapted speed and a generous distance to the vehicle in front are crucial. Jerky steering movements should be avoided, and if you skid, it is important to remain calm: disengage the clutch, brake and steer carefully. The ADAC also emphasizes that caution is required at temperatures around freezing point as the road surface can change quickly.

Given the recent weather conditions, a warning was also issued for freezing rain on Tuesday night, especially in Western Pomerania. This reinforces the need to drive carefully and be considerate of winter road conditions.

Statistics show that road traffic accidents due to snow and black ice are a serious problem in Germany from 2011 to 2024 Statista. Given the region's high accident rates, safe driving advice is particularly important at this time of year.
