The focus: Stasi prison and escape stories on July 2!
On July 2, 2025 at 7:30 p.m., the "Mühle" in Kröpelin cordially invites you to a special event: "In custody in the state security". Dr. Steffi Brüning, the head of the Rostock documentation and memorial, will give a gripping lecture on the history of the Ministry of State Security (MfS) in the Rostock district. This prison, which was built at the end of the 1950s, was not visible from the outside and from 1960 to 1989 kept around 4,900 women and men for political reasons. The most common charges led to their detention were "agitation", "anti -state connection" and "tried to escape the Republic".
The prison had around 50 cells on three floors, in which the detainees had to spend an average of five to six months. This time was characterized by constant interrogations and extreme insulation before they were finally convicted by a court and laid in prison facilities. In order to further illustrate the topic, the short film "Fleece Way Ostsee" by Justin Metelmann and Florian Wolf will be presented. The film tells the fictional escape story of two young people and is based on historical events on the Baltic Sea, a hotspot of monitoring through the border brigade coast and the MfS.
a look into the past
The topic of monitoring and repression in the GDR remains relevant, especially since the memory of events how this is kept alive through events. The dialogue about the secret police, which was notorious under the name of the state security in the GDR, contributes to an important cultural and social understanding of that time. The 91,000 full -time employees of the MfS enjoyed considerable privileges and were able to operate with far -reaching police powers. In addition, around 180,000 unofficial employees worked and spied on their fellow citizens, which created a feeling of distrust and uncertainty within the population.
Again and again the readers ask themselves the question: What remains of this time, especially in a cultural sense? The GDR rock scene is an example of the multi-layered dimensions of culture in the East German past. Rock music was anything but apolitical in the GDR. Rather, she was a valve for young people who were looking for their identity and rebelled against the rigid norms of society. The SED, which was in power at the time, had clear guidelines for the promotion and regulation of music that often tried to lock out western influences. This time was extremely fertile for rock music in the 70s, even if the control increased from the 80s, which led to a decline in popularity.
