Reading week in Demmin: Students inspire elementary school students in the arena!
In Demmin, students from the University of Rostock recently organized an exciting reading week for primary school students. Under the leadership of Professor Dr. Wenke Mückel, 29 teacher training students from the fourth semester took part in this exciting project, which took place at the Pestalozzi School for children in grades 1 to 4. The aim of this initiative was to make reading easier for the youngest students in a playful way and to introduce them to the joy of it. Uckermarkkurier reports.
The week was filled with numerous varied program items, with the focus being on the varied training of reading skills, text comprehension and creative writing. A performance-differentiated reading lesson took place in the morning, and in the afternoon the children were able to take part in activities such as baking waffles, language games and creative writing workshops. This approach ensured a balance between education and fun.
Variety of activities
A highlight of the week was the big competition in the Beermann Arena, where the students competed in teams for reading points. At various stations, the children had to solve tasks that required both listening and logical thinking. The positive feedback was overwhelming: students like Lenny Winter and Finn Mika were enthusiastic about the experiences they had, which they found both educational and entertaining. Teacher Annette Fingerloos, who coordinated the project, reported consistently positive experiences for both the children and the students.
The event was also supported by the Hanseatic city of Demmin, which offered free overnight stays in the Luisentor. This initiative not only promotes reading skills, but also a sense of community and social skills among elementary school students.
Reading promotion and creative ideas
In topics such as promoting reading, creative approaches in primary school can increase interest in books. The transformation of classrooms into reading islands, as also described in the article by alexandra-wagner.de is suggested, enables children to create their own “reading world”. Ideas such as reading caves under tables, islands decorated with cuddly toys or a reading tent encourage students to become active themselves. This could also be integrated into the project week as a practical element.
In addition, various programs to promote reading support the university students. For example, the Education Server website offers materials and methods for promoting reading that were specifically developed to improve children's reading skills. Effective reading training and motivation for reading can be found here, as described on the page.
In summary, this project impressively shows how education can be promoted through play and creativity. The reading week in Demmin is another example of how education can be made sustainable with commitment and innovative ideas.
