Warener Tafel in need: Fewer monetary donations endanger important aid!
In the Müritz region, Warener Tafel has played a central role as a food distribution point for those in need in recent years. More and more people in need of support are coming here to meet their basic needs. Up to 650 people use the services every week, including many pensioners and working parents who are forced to seek help due to their financial situation. André Rath, who has headed the Warener Tafel for around seven years, is concerned about the decline in monetary donations, which is putting the organization under increasing pressure.
The Tafel in Waren not only offers food, but also a space for social interaction and support. Instead of an anonymous pick-up service, community is lived here. “Social participation and the feeling of being part of a community are of great importance to our customers,” emphasizes Rath. The food bank also takes special needs of its clients into account, such as religious dietary requirements, and tries to meet these within the limits of available donations. Collaboration with the municipality also secures important resources and support.
Background of the blackboard system
The Warener Tafel is part of an extensive network of over 970 food banks in Germany, which are represented by the umbrella organization Tafel Deutschland. This advocates for the needs of the food banks and supports their work with practical assistance as well as through the food bank academy, which offers training and exchange opportunities for volunteers. Volunteers collect surpluses from trade, which are then distributed to people affected by poverty. These efforts not only help support people in need, but also make a valuable contribution to reducing food waste, which in Germany is directly related to the Tafel's work every year - up to 18 million tons of food end up in the trash every year, a significant portion of which could be avoided.
A total of 30 food banks are active in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region, providing different offers depending on the resources available and the number of volunteers. As in the entire Federal Republic, not only people who have been dependent on the offer of help for a long time, but also middle-income families are increasingly dependent on support. The current economic challenges - caused by the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions - have exacerbated the situation of many citizens and increased the number of those in need.
The future of food banks
The Warener Tafel organizes an annual long table, which attracts many visitors and further strengthens the sense of community. But in order to continue their work in the future, the food banks rely on support from donations. Providing gasoline for delivery in particular is a major hurdle. Rath and his team hope that people in the region will continue to get involved and not only be aware of the work of the food banks, but also actively support them. Ultimately, social responsibility and neighborhood help lie in the hands of citizens, and every help counts to strengthen the community.
Overall, the food banks in Germany show that it is possible to both reduce food waste and give people in need financial flexibility. In addition to purely material support, they promote social cohesion and enable encounters between people with different life and professional experiences.
