Boizenburg's Shadow Island: A green sign for climate protection!

Boizenburg shines again in new splendor! On Friday, September 19, 2025, a dedicated participation event took place at the “Schatteninsel” bus stop. In bright weather, numerous citizens, members of the climate workshop and employees of the city's climate office met to jointly pursue the goal of restoring the designed stop. Loud Northern Courier This is the third time that Boizenburg has taken part in the nationwide climate adaptation week.

The “Shadow Island” emerged from the “Youth are involved in climate change!” competition, which took place as part of the PLATZ-B project. Four students had the brilliant idea of greening the bus stop and thereby setting an example for climate adaptation and biological diversity. Climate adaptation manager Julia Gerdsen highlights the lasting impact of this student idea and emphasizes how important such initiatives are to increase awareness of environmental and climate protection.

Active for nature

The participatory activity not only included cleaning the stop, but also planting insect-friendly climbing plants. Helpers planted ivy vines and other plants to freshen up the “Shadow Island” environment. At the same time, part of the neighboring flower meadow was mowed to provide insects with a place to overwinter. This is part of the overarching plan to make Boizenburg close to nature and more sustainable. The flower meadow was created last year and contributes to promoting biological diversity. The campaign was organized by the Boizenburg climate workshop and the Boizenburg/Elbe climate office, like boizenburg.de reported.

Participation in this hands-on activity was well received. Dirk Foitlänger from the Klimawerkstatt emphasizes the importance of the balance between order and nature. With such small measures as greening a bus stop, you can make a big difference - for the climate, nature and the quality of life locally. Drinks were provided and participants were asked to bring gloves, while tools, plants and cleaning supplies were provided by the organizers.

Powerful solidarity for climate protection

The “Shadow Island” now functions as a visible climate adaptation measure in the city of Boizenburg and is a strong signal for climate protection through sponsorship, commitment and community cohesion. The campaign concluded with the cleaned benches and a well-maintained trellis, which is now not only functional but also a real eye-catcher.

With this campaign, Boizenburg is participating in a Germany-wide movement for climate adaptation, which is supported by the Federal Environment Ministry and the “Climate Adaptation” center. The local initiatives show how important it is to act together for a greener and more livable environment. We can look forward to the next steps!
