Renovation of Hangar 1 in Pütnitz: A step into the future!

A comprehensive renovation project has begun at the former Pütnitz military airfield in Ribnitz-Damgarten, which is intended to serve as a model for the maintenance and use of historical buildings. The focus is on Hangar 1, an impressive building from the 1930s that is not only considered a technical monument, but also plays a central role in the context of the planned Bernstein resort. Loud Baltic Sea newspaper This renovation could provide important insights into costs and methods for repairing the other buildings on the site.

The condition of the building structure is assessed as inadequate, particularly at the transitions from the masonry to the roof. A specialist concrete renovation company was commissioned to thoroughly clean the hangar as a first step. The work is carried out using high-pressure cleaning with a water lance that works at an impressive 2000 bar. This is intended to expose joints and determine the condition of the reinforced concrete structure. The technical support of the project is in the hands of Dr. Gerhard Stenzel, an experienced civil engineer who specializes in concrete construction.

The importance of the project

But why is this project so important? In addition to the need to renovate the hangar, the entire area plays a crucial role in the development of the connected Bernstein Resort. The plans envisage developing Pütnitz into a location for culture, commerce and leisure. As part of this development, 3,200 beds will be created in new holiday homes and apartments as well as a campsite with 300 parking spaces. There are also plans for a technical museum in hangars 1 to 3 and a riding stable in the eastern area. These initiatives could not only stimulate regional interest, but also attract national visitors.

But not everyone is behind this project. A citizens' initiative called “No mass tourism on Pütnitz” is vehemently opposed to the plans. Proceedings are currently underway against the permit, while the administrative court has banned demolition work. However, the initiative is accused of using incorrect numbers in its argument. This backlash shows how polarized opinions are on this project.

Outlook and challenges

The trial repair that is now being carried out on Hangar 1 covers around a quarter of the roof area, i.e. around 3200 m². The aim of this measure is to examine the ability to renovate and develop suitable procedures. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the future and what results the ongoing work will bring. There is particular uncertainty about the acceptance of the project among the population and its impact on the region.

The ongoing work on Hangar 1 could soon lead to a significant turning point in the history of the former military airfield. The area has great potential and it will be exciting to see whether the developers' visions can prevail against the opposition.
