Increasing theft crime in Germany

The number of cases shows that thefts are still very popular in Germany. The police crime statistics (PKS) for 2024 were published on April 2, 2025 and revealed that around 5.8 million crimes were registered, of which over 1.94 million were thefts, i.e. around a third of all crimes. However, compared to 2015, when almost 2.5 million thefts were reported, this is noticeable, as the proportion of overall crimes is increasingly decreasing. The corona pandemic in particular temporarily led to fewer opportunities to commit crimes.

While there was an increase in theft crimes after the pandemic, there was a decrease of 1.6% in 2024 compared to 2023. The decrease in shoplifting (-5.0%) and bicycle theft (-6.9%) is particularly notable. This also shows the first successes of technical measures and prevention work to combat crime.

Use preventative measures sensibly

The high clearance rate for shoplifting is 89.3%, while for general theft it was only 31.4%. The decline in the number of unreported cases - only 52% of thefts are reported - is also an issue that speaks for more education and prevention. Citizens are invited to find out about the various reporting and prevention options. On the Online station of the Saxony police Many concerns can be conveyed, but these are not suitable for emergencies.

The situation in Sassnitz makes it clear that despite all prevention efforts, crime remains a challenge. The population is required to show vigilance and inform themselves about the correct measures in the event of theft. Stay safe!
