Mobility in the Middle Ages: New knowledge of the Hanse period in Lübeck!

An exciting evening is imminent, for all those interested in history in Lübeck! On June 19, 2025, Dr. Angela Huang and Dr. Bart Holterman, which is part of the lecture series "Mobility". Under the title "How mobile is the Middle Ages?" the two researchers will take a look at the intermediate movements in the Hanseraum around 1500. This is reported by the University of Greifswald .

The lecture addresses how and to what extent “normal” residents of the cities in the Hanseraum left their place of life. The Middle Ages are often perceived as a real estate age in which travel was considered dangerous and most people rarely left their home. But in recent years, researchers such as Huang and Holterman have examined the mobility of this time in more detail in order to draw a more differentiated picture. They use urban letter books and the digital mapping of the historical network of trails.

research approach and objective

The goal of the two scientists is to reconstruct the temporal and spatial expansion of the living environments of these citizens at that time. They will also focus on groups of people such as merchants, pilgrims and messengers who were by no means as immobile as is often assumed. Your findings could help revolutionize the perception of mobility in the Middle Ages. This comes from an article of the University of Greifswald .

Admission to the lecture is free, and even those who cannot be on site have the opportunity to participate online-a real plus for those interested. The encounter with the research results promises information about an often misunderstood chapter in our history.
