Dispute over solar park: City politics in turmoil after court ruling!
A failed start for the solar park in Strittense: the groundbreaking ceremony planned for Thursday had to be canceled at short notice. The reason for this are lawsuits filed by the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, which appealed to the Higher Administrative Court in Greifswald to examine the legal validity of the development plan. This unexpected turnaround is causing great discontent in city politics, as nordkurier.de reports.
The Social-Ecological Citizens' Platform expressed its irritation to the district about the approach and called for more professional communication. “Citizens should be informed at an early stage,” they say. The impression was created that a democratic decision by the city council was being ignored. City politicians, including Mayor Michael Galander, are disappointed with the district administrator's actions and criticize the sudden change of course.
The background to the lawsuit
The focus is on the regulatory control procedure, in which the district considers the development plan to be unlawful. It is argued that public concerns – particularly nature conservation – have not been adequately acknowledged. These concerns are not new, as the project has suffered repeated delays over the past five years, including due to nature conservation issues. Originally an area of 300 hectares was planned, which has now been reduced to around 130 hectares. The district had approved the plan at the end of 2024, but this trust is now in jeopardy, according to a report from ndr.de.
The residents of Strittense are against the construction of the solar park. Many fear that in the future they will be looking at solar panels instead of fertile farmland. Nevertheless, the project is of great importance for the city of Anklam, as the solar park is expected to supply up to 180 megawatts of electricity. This could not only secure the energy supply of a new industrial area, but also bring over 400,000 euros into the city coffers annually.
A divided spectrum of opinions
The situation is being hotly debated in the political arena. Dr. Georg Becker, a member of the parliamentary group, criticizes the spontaneous cancellation and can understand the incomprehensibility of the current situation. Party leader Christian Schröder sees personal interests at play and calls for more objectivity from everyone involved. He emphasizes that the city could suffer significant damage as a result of the district's actions.
CDU parliamentary group leader Hannes Campe has always expressed concerns about the solar park, but accepts the political majority vote as long as the process is carried out legally. He appeals for an objective solution directly to the mayor. So the question remains: How will this conflict develop, and when can the groundbreaking that many had hoped for finally take place?
