In addition, an impressive 77.5 meter long birthday table will be set up on the shooting wall, inviting everyone to celebrate.
What is particularly noteworthy is that all Greifswald citizens, clubs and institutions are called upon to take an active part in the celebrations. Ideas and suggestions can be submitted until the end of 2024 - a great opportunity to bring history to life!
A city with a rich history
Greifswald looks back on an eventful past that dates back to the Middle Ages. The city was founded in 1250 and quickly received Lübeck city charter, which consolidated its independence from the Pomeranian dukes. Greifswald was often overshadowed by the neighboring towns of Stralsund and Stettin, but the founding of the university in 1456 gave the city new splendor and importance. This university still shapes the city today, as does the well-known painter Caspar David Friedrich, who lived and worked here. Wikipedia states that Greifswald was first mentioned as a member of the Hanseatic League in 1278 and has experienced numerous tides of development over the centuries.
After a turbulent period, including the destruction of the Thirty Years' War and Swedish rule, the city developed moderately in the 19th century. The events of the Second World War left a clear mark, but since the 1990s Greifswald has experienced an upswing with concentrated renovation measures in the historic city center.
With its 59,200 inhabitants, Greifswald presents itself in 2020 as a lively city that has a lot to offer - from its history to cultural highlights. [NDR].
Anyone who would like to celebrate a piece of history is warmly invited to actively participate in this important festival and discover Greifswald's rich culture. Whether at the Hanseatic Market or the city sports festival – history becomes tangible and alive here.
