Attention drivers: New catalog of fines in Poland – driving license in danger!
More and more citizens from Western Pomerania are making their way to Poland, be it to fill up the tank, go shopping or to visit the hairdresser. But you should keep in mind the new, strict regulations of the catalog of fines in the neighboring country. The regulations in Poland have been noticeably tightened since the beginning of August. This reports Northern Courier.
Anyone behind the wheel in Poland must therefore be even more careful. If you exceed the speed limit by up to 30 km/h, you can face a fine of 93 euros. Anyone who goes for it and drives more than 30 km/h too fast will be fined at least 180 euros. Particularly bitter: If you exceed 50 km/h inside or outside built-up areas, you can expect a fine of 5,000 zloty (around 1,170 euros) and a three-month driving license suspension. Driving despite a license revocation can even lead to a lifelong driving ban in Poland.
Penalties and new regulations
The new regulations aim to increase road safety and further reduce the number of road deaths, which have already risen to 46 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the first half of 2025 - seven more than in the previous year. In the case of illegal car racing or serious traffic violations, prison sentences of up to five years are possible; In the case of fatal accidents, it can be up to ten years.
The fines can be up to 30,000 zloty (approx. 7,000 euros) for particularly serious offenses. A new ban on photography at accident scenes also sets an additional accent: Violations can result in fines of up to 4,600 euros and imprisonment of 5 to 30 days. Important to know: All fines in Poland are also enforced in Germany, while points in the Polish traffic offenders file do not apply in Germany.
Traveler regulations
Travelers who want to explore the Baltic Sea coast or the Tatra Mountains should also familiarize themselves with the traffic rules in Poland. These are largely similar to those in Germany, but there are some special features to consider, such as the requirement to wear seat belts for all occupants and the need to carry suitable child seats for children under 12 years of age or smaller than 150 cm. Another point: Anyone caught with a cell phone to their ear during a traffic stop must expect a fine of at least 120 euros.
Anyone driving to Poland should also have their vehicle documents and proof of insurance with them. To be on the safe side, it is advisable to carry a registration document for the vehicle, especially if you are not the owner. Not to be forgotten: In Poland there is a blood alcohol limit of 0.2, and anyone who exceeds this must expect hefty fines that start at 540 euros.
In order to raise awareness of the new legal requirements, training dates are offered. These will take place on September 16th in Mönkebude, on September 18th in Pasewalk and on September 24th in Jatznick. It is advisable to take part in these training courses in order to be up to date with traffic regulations in Poland and thus avoid possible penalties.
