Celebrate on the water: 65 years Greif of Ueckermünde in the city harbor!

The anticipation for a Maritime festival is great: the crew of the youth sailing yacht Greif from Ueckermünde invites you on June 14th and June 15th her 65th anniversary in the city harbor of Ueckermünde. The chairman of the association, Andreas van der Heyden, has already announced big plans for the festival.

The history of this traditional yacht began on September 14, 1960, when it ran off the stack as a Kiel-Schwert-Seekreuzer in the VEB Yachtwerft Berlin-Köpenick. With the name "always ready" as a pioneer sailing school ship for the Müritz, the Greif has become an integral part of Maritime Culture in Ueckermünde in the past decades. After its first Baltic Sea trip in 1961, the yacht finally came to the city on October 7, 1961.

The entire weekend is under the motto: maritime history experience up close . Visitors can look forward to “Open Ship”, in which the griffin of Ueckermünde can be visited every hour. For the little guests there is an exciting program with bouncy castle and other activities.

A look back at the eventful past

What makes the griffin so special? Your story is characterized by adventures. After decommissioning due to structural defects in 1988, a letter Czech pioneers to Erich Honecker was able to cause the general repair in 1989. The work that started in 1990 was disabled by the monetary union, but in 1993 a club from Marburg took over the station and the ship, which finally successfully completed the project.

Since 1998, the support association has been involved with a great team of volunteers, which brings the Greif on a trip with children and adolescents from disadvantaged conditions as well as school and club groups on 160 to 180 days a year. The big anniversary festival is a great sign of the cohesion of the community and the love for the maritime tradition.

There is a lot to experience and discover - the entire Ueckermünder population and all friends of water sports are welcome to become part of the celebrations on this special weekend. In addition to the regular program, many supporters, including the Seesportclub and the coat of arms of Ueckermünde , will also offer various trips and activities. A truly not to be missed event that keeps the maritime spirit of Ueckermünde alive!
