Drought and heat wave: saving water is now a must!

The weather is currently a problem for many people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: extreme heat and long-lasting drought burden both the population and nature. The water authority in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district calls for water to use water. An appeal that makes sense in view of the prevailing conditions, because the water shortage in Germany is an issue that is becoming more and more urgent.

The current temperatures in particular challenge hobby gardeners: they should advise their plants to give water only in the evening, at night or early in the morning. This helps to avoid evaporation, especially with wind strengths over 30 km/h. This is not a unique selling point, because even in other regions of Germany, such as Saxony-Anhalt, measures such as the restriction of water withdrawals from rivers and the ban on lawn sprinkles were taken due to the drought. In the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim, however, no such restriction is currently planned, since the water supply is initially considered harmless, even if the use of drinking water is to be reduced to irrigate gardens.

a region in change

The current water crisis is not only a local problem, but also reflects a larger phenomenon. According to the Deutschlandfunk , climate change leads to an increasing dryness in Germany that forces farmers to use artificial irrigation. While the spring of 2025 was already extremely dry, data from the drought monitor show decreasing moisture in the upper layers of the soil. Young plants and flat -rooted cultures are particularly affected - their chances of survival are disappearing more and more.

How bad the situation actually is shows that in many places the water levels, including the Rhine, are alarming. This not only leads to water problems for agriculture, but also has far-reaching ecological consequences, which the

The long breath is required

The BUND for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) urgently warns of the wide ecological consequences that arise from the drought. Factors such as the rising temperatures that are driven by human use of fossil fuels increase the problems. Experts therefore emphasize the need to implement climate protection measures and accelerate the exit from fossil-based energies. If the EU Commission warns against the risks of persistent low water levels in rivers, nobody can close the eyes to the fact that the entire region is affected by climate-related challenges.

What remains is an appeal to everyone: We now have to act to secure our water resources not only for the current generation, but also for our children and their children. A economical handling of water, be it in your own garden or in everyday life, is essential to offer the drought forehead and to preserve the natural diversity in our homeland.
